On May 7, 2025, the Government of India formally announced Operation Sindoor, a precision military operation undertaken in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including one Nepali national.
Below is the official statement by Shri Vikram Misri, the Foreign Secretary of India, addressing the press:
Official Statement
“On April 22, 2025, Pakistani and Pakistan-trained terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba, under the guise of The Resistance Front (TRF), carried out a barbaric terror attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. This heinous act resulted in the tragic deaths of 26 civilians.
The attack was designed to shatter the peace in Kashmir, target the tourism sector, and provoke communal unrest. The Government of India has irrefutable evidence linking the attack to Pakistan-based terror groups.
Despite international condemnation, including a statement from the UN Security Council on April 25, Pakistan has taken no credible steps to dismantle the terror infrastructure on its soil.
In light of this, and to prevent further cross-border terrorism, India has exercised its sovereign right to self-defense by launching Operation Sindoor—a limited, precise, and non-escalatory mission to dismantle the identified terror camps across the Line of Control.
These actions are measured and necessary, taken in the interest of national security, justice, and peace. We reaffirm India’s commitment to protecting its citizens, upholding global norms, and defeating terrorism in all its forms.”
Purpose of Operation Sindoor
- Dismantle active terror infrastructure
- Pre-empt imminent terror attacks
- Hold perpetrators and sponsors accountable
- Preserve peace and stability in Jammu & Kashmir
India’s Global Responsibility
India’s action is consistent with the UN Charter, international law, and global commitments to combat terrorism. The nation acted responsibly and proportionately, in accordance with the global call to bring terrorists and their sponsors to justice.
